Lapland essentials

What families need to know about Santa Claus Village, SantaPark and the Arctic cold.

Santa Claus Village

It's open every day of the year and both entry and meeting Santa are free. Photos with Santa aren't free, though: you can't use your own camera, and the official photo packages usually cost about €40–€55. The Arctic Circle line runs across the main square. Santa's Office hours are 08:00–20:00 from 30 Nov 2026 to 3 Jan 2027, with shorter hours in November.

SantaPark

This is a separate indoor Christmas theme park built inside a cave near the airport. It opens from 31 Oct 2026 to 16 Jan 2027, and tickets start at about €49 for adults and €40 for children aged 3–12. Under-3s go free. Book tickets online at santapark.fi.

Temperatures and daylight

Visit Rovaniemi gives a typical range of -10°C to -20°C for December and -15°C to -30°C for January. In December you get about 2–3 hours of daylight, and around 21 Dec the sun barely rises. Snow usually arrives in November but isn't guaranteed early in the season.

What to wear

Wear layers. Start with a thermal base layer, add fleece or wool, then a windproof outer layer on top. You'll also need insulated snow boots, a hat that covers the ears, a neck warmer and proper mittens. Many hotels and safari companies lend thermal overalls and boots for their activities, so check what's included before you buy anything.

Best dates

Late November and early December are usually quieter and cheaper. Snow is more reliable from December onwards. The weeks just before Christmas are the busiest and most expensive, so book flights and hotels as early as you can.
