London to Amsterdam: Eurostar vs Flights

Amsterdam is one of the easiest city breaks from London, and it's one of the few where the train really competes with the plane. Here's every way to get there, with honest door-to-door times and costs.

The short answer

From central London, the Eurostar and a flight take about the same time door to door, roughly 5 to 5½ hours. The Eurostar takes about 4 hours from St Pancras straight into Amsterdam Centraal, with no airport transfer at the other end, so it's the easiest choice for most people. Flights from Luton, Gatwick, Heathrow or London City are often cheaper if you book early, and work better if you live near one of those airports.

Trip essentials

A few things that make the journey smoother, whichever way you go.

Eurostar check-in

Eurostar asks Standard and Plus passengers to arrive at St Pancras 75 minutes before departure. The gate closes 30 minutes before the train leaves. Passport checks happen in London, so you walk straight off the train in Amsterdam.

New EU border checks

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) now records British travellers' fingerprints and a photo the first time you enter. Allow a little extra time on your first trip, at St Pancras or at Schiphol.

Coming home by train

On the way back, you go through security and UK passport checks at Amsterdam Centraal before boarding, so arrive early there too.

Amsterdam Light Festival

The 2026/27 edition runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, with light artworks along the canals every evening. Lights switch on from about 17:00–17:30. You can see them free on foot, or book a canal cruise.
