The short answer

For most people the train is best. LNER and Lumo run from London King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley, and the fastest trains take just over 4 hours. Waverley sits beside East Princes Street Gardens, so you can walk out of the station and into the market in a few minutes.

Market essentials

Edinburgh's Christmas spreads across Princes Street Gardens and George Street in the city centre.

Dates

Edinburgh's Christmas runs from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The Christmas market is in East Princes Street Gardens, and it's usually closed on Christmas Day. Check edinburgh-christmas.com before you book.

Opening hours

Most stalls and rides usually open from about 10:00 to 22:00. Hours can change on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and around New Year, so check the official site for your dates.

Where

The main market, with about 70 stalls, is in East Princes Street Gardens below the Scott Monument. West Princes Street Gardens has the family funfair, and the ice rink is on George Street. Entry to the market is free, but rides and skating are ticketed.

Good to know

Friday and Saturday evenings get very busy, so go on a weekday afternoon if you can. Edinburgh's Hogmanay follows at New Year, and the street party needs separate tickets.

  1. London to Edinburgh (EDI)About 1h 15m–1h 30m in the air. British Airways flies from Heathrow and London City. easyJet flies from Gatwick, Luton and Stansted, and Ryanair from Stansted. Check current schedules.

Typical return fares are about £50–£150, but check-in, security and the airport transfer mean it's often no quicker than the train door to door.

3

Caledonian Sleeper from Euston

  1. London Euston to Edinburgh WaverleyThe Lowland sleeper usually leaves Euston late in the evening, at around 23:45, and arrives in Edinburgh at about 07:30. 1. Coach: London Victoria to EdinburghNational Express, Megabus and FlixBus run direct coaches, including overnight services. The trip takes about 8–10 hours, and advance fares start at around £15–£25 one way.
  2. DrivingIt's about 400 miles via the A1(M) or the M1/M6, which takes 7–8 hours without stops. Edinburgh has a Low Emission Zone covering the city centre, and parking near Princes Street is expensive, so use a park and ride site such as Ingliston or Hermiston Gait.

Before you drive, check whether your vehicle meets the Edinburgh LEZ standards, because non-compliant vehicles are fined.

Is it quicker to fly or take the train from London to Edinburgh?

The flight is only about 1h 15m–1h 30m. Once you add the trip to the airport, security and the 30-minute transfer into the city, door-to-door times are similar to LNER's 4-hour trains. The train also drops you right beside the market.

LNER and Lumo leave from King's Cross. Avanti West Coast and the Caledonian Sleeper leave from Euston. King's Cross is usually the quickest option.

Does the Caledonian Sleeper run every night?

It runs Sunday to Friday nights, with no service on Saturday nights. It usually leaves Euston late in the evening and arrives in Edinburgh at about 07:30. Check sleeper.scot for your date.

Is the Edinburgh Christmas market free?

Yes, entry to the market is free. You pay for the funfair rides, the Big Wheel and the ice rink, and it's worth booking skating in advance for weekends.

Can I drive into Edinburgh city centre?

You can, but a Low Emission Zone covers the city centre, parking is limited and costly, and roads around Princes Street are busy in December. Park and ride, or the train, is easier.
