The short answer

For most people the best option is a direct flight to Barcelona El Prat (BCN), which takes about 2h 15m. Heathrow has British Airways and Vueling, Gatwick has easyJet and Vueling, and Stansted and Luton have the budget airlines. From the airport, the Aerobús takes you to Plaça de Catalunya in about 35 minutes. If you'd rather not fly, take the Eurostar to Paris and the direct TGV to Barcelona Sants, which takes a full day.

City break essentials

A few things that make a Barcelona trip easier, whatever time of year you go.

Airport to the centre

The Aerobús (about €7.75 one way) runs 24 hours from both terminals to Plaça de Catalunya. The R2 Nord train (about €5.50) is quicker to Sants and Passeig de Gràcia but only leaves from Terminal 2; from Terminal 1 take the free shuttle bus first. A taxi to the centre is usually €30–€40.

Which terminal?

British Airways and Vueling use Terminal 1. easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air usually use Terminal 2. Check your booking, because it changes how you get into town.

Christmas in Barcelona

The Fira de Santa Llúcia, by the cathedral, is Barcelona's oldest Christmas market and usually runs from late November to 22 December, with a smaller fair at the Sagrada Família. The Three Kings parade on the evening of 5 January is the city's biggest Christmas event. Check official dates for 2026 before you book.

Winter weather

Barcelona is mild in winter, usually around 14–15°C by day in December, with plenty of sunshine. Evenings are cool, so pack a warm layer.

Book big sights ahead

Tickets for the Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló are timed and often sell out, especially at weekends. Book online before you travel.
