The short answer

For most people the best option is a direct Emirates flight from Birmingham to Dubai, which takes about 7 hours and runs twice a day. You land at Terminal 3, where the Red Line metro takes you into the city, or an official taxi takes you straight to your hotel. If the dates or fares from Birmingham don't suit you, Manchester and Heathrow have even more flights.

Winter sun essentials

A few things worth knowing before you book a winter trip to Dubai.

Weather

December is warm rather than scorching: typically around 26°C by day and 16°C at night, with very little rain and the sea at about 25°C. Bring a light jumper for evenings and air-conditioned malls.

Entry for UK travellers

UK passport holders can normally get a free visa on arrival for a holiday. Check the latest entry rules on GOV.UK's foreign travel advice for the United Arab Emirates before you travel, and make sure your passport is valid for at least six months.

Getting around

The metro is cheap, clean and air-conditioned, and covers Downtown, the Dubai Mall, Deira and the Marina. You need a Nol card (buy one at any station); cash isn't accepted at the gates. Taxis are plentiful and metered.

Good to know

The Dubai Shopping Festival usually runs from mid-December into January, with sales, fireworks and events. Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive weeks, so book flights and hotels early.
