London to Gran Canaria for Winter Sun

Gran Canaria is an easy winter sun trip from London, with daytime highs around 20–23°C from December to February and plenty of direct flights. This guide covers flights, airport buses to the southern resorts and Las Palmas, the sunny south versus the north, and the best day trips.

The short answer

Fly direct from Gatwick, Stansted or Luton to Gran Canaria (LPA), about 4h 20m–4h 35m. From the airport, Global bus 66 runs to Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas in about 40 minutes, bus 91 goes on to Puerto de Mogán in about an hour, and bus 60 reaches Las Palmas in 20–30 minutes. A taxi to the southern resorts costs about €45–€55.

Winter sun essentials

Gran Canaria has a sunny, dry south, a cloudier north and a mountainous centre.

Weather

Daytime highs are usually around 20–23°C from December to February, with nights around 14–15°C and a sea temperature of about 19–20°C. Evenings can feel cool, so pack a light jacket.

South vs north

The south (Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Puerto de Mogán) is sunnier and drier, with only about 3 rainy days a month in winter. Las Palmas in the north-east gets more cloud and roughly twice as many rainy days, but is a real city with good food and a great town beach.

Roque Nublo

The island's best-known hike, to a 1,813 m rock pinnacle, is about 1.5 km each way from Degollada de la Goleta. Between 09:00 and 17:00 you must book a time slot in advance at reservasroquenublo.com, and spaces sell out. The car park by the trail has closed for good: park at Cruz de los Llanos or Tejeda and take Global bus 18 up, or walk about an hour. It can be below freezing up there in winter.

Good to know

Global is the island's intercity bus company; you can pay on the bus or at the ticket machine at the airport stop. Timetables change by season, so check Global's website before you travel. Gran Canaria uses the euro.
